Happy Birthday to Trevor (35) and Allison (31)...

The October birthdays blowing out their candles.

This is what happens when your mother-in-law requests a cake for a 35th birthday, a 31st birthday and also mentions that her daughter-in-law is expecting. Allison and I added the cookie bat head to the random raised icing "bump".

We thought we were hysterical.

Apparently I drive a little less than 10,000 miles a year...

My car turned 70,000 miles today.

It rang in this milestone with a trip to the dealership because the "Check Engine Soon" light came on sometime on Monday, and it started making a weird noise. And wouldn't you know the blasted "Check Engine Soon" light went off on my way to the dealership? The noise also became suddenly silent, as if the car knew where it was going and why and wanted me to look like a crazy lady.

Seriously, I am lucky that way. The people at Sewell think I am a car hypercondriac.

Luckily, they were able to diagnose the cause of the engine light. The thermostat in the engine was broken so my car didn't know how hot it was getting. The noise, on the other hand, is still a mystery.

In other news, Trevor is finally dealing with the fact that his car is slowly falling apart after ten years and nearly 200,000 miles. And as much as we have enjoyed not having a car payment in YEARS, I think he is ready to go test driving this weekend. We are leaning towards the new Lexus hybrid. Tres exciting. The garage is already cleaned out in anticipation!

The best 44 second break I've had all day...

(I always knew there was a good reason why I'd never picked up smoking)

Apologies and making nice...

I would like to apologize. It appears that last night's post caused a lot of anxiety. At least judging by the number of phone calls, emails and text message I received throughout the day today asking if I was okay.

I'm fine. Really. I didn't mean to worry anyone.

My favorite reaction came from Trevor, who doesn't always read my blog. Apparently, one of his coworkers (Hi, Kelly!) told Trevor that my blog post the night before made her want to cry. Since he hadn't read it, Trevor assumed I had blogged about our 2 AM visit from the neighborhood possum.

Which I guess after THIS POST and THIS POST almost makes sense. We've been up to our eyeballs in nature in our backyard recently, and it probably does make Trevor want to cry every time one of the dogs goes ape sh*t in the middle of the night and I make him go investigate and deal with the disturbance. And by "deal with the disturbance" I really mean "stare at it through the patio doors and shout and/or bang on the glass in an effort to scare whatever-it-was away". It is a tactic that is rarely met with success.

To be fair, I would gladly handle it but after THIS INCIDENT Trevor prefers that I just stay in bed. Since I am sure that I will be dealing with more than my fair share of 2 AM feedings in the very near future, I am happy to oblige and let Trevor stare down the possum in his boxers in the study a few times a week.

See how our relationship works?

Anyway, since I caused distress, I figured I owed everyone something lighthearted and having nothing to do with pregnancy, babies or Thor. Consequently, I offer the following:

It is State Fair time, and every year I try to remember to post stories with a behind-the-scenes perspective. This year is no different. Except the top two stories from 2011 are shocking firsts for me and the rest of the museum staff. I've said it before, but you really can't make this stuff up. The State Fair is a fascinating time.

Story One: A fair goer went behind one of the temporary walls in the exhibit and (I kid you not) took a giant poo. And it wasn't like they were sick or anything. This was a poo that someone had to pop-a-squat and labor for. Better yet, they mere feet from a functioning bathroom, and the human turd was only discovered when one of the exhibit's big sponsors went behind the temporary wall and stepped in it.

If given a choice between stepping in dog poo or human poo, I would pick dog poo every time. Just saying.

Story Two: The security guard happened upon a couple fornicating in the auditorium. Granted, it was dark in there (there was a movie being played), but the couple was making very little effort to be discrete. And it wasn't like they were the only ones in there, either.

And you only thought people went to the fair for the fried food!

Yep. The fair is all glitz and glam 24/7. See why I love it?

(Groan.)

The End.

I get it. Everyone has problems.

The one consistency though out my first pregnancy is that it has been one of the loneliest, most confusing times of my life. And I am not saying that because I am being melodramatic or because I am having a bad day. In fact, today has been rather uneventful other than the Rangers' amazing extra inning walk off grand slam victory over the Tigers.

Speaking of which: That was awesome. I stayed on the elliptical machine for an hour after lifting because the game was so nail bitingly tense and stressful to watch. I didn't even notice as the minutes ticked by. The Rangers finally pulled it out in the 11th inning, which brought my cardio marathon to an end. All in all, I burned 1275 pre-pregnancy weight calories according to my heart rate monitor, which makes me feel a little less like the giant fat a$$ I've become over the past 7+ months.

(I've decided it is all about the small victories in the third trimester.)

So, see? It wasn't a bad day. If anything it was productive and exciting.

It is just that being pregnant at a time when none of your close friends are is isolating. I do not feel like I have anyone I can confide in, and it is all so overwhelming. In an effort to help sort things out, I've asked the advice of pretty much every person I can think of with small kids and babies. People have been so generous with their time and answers, so I really have nothing to complain about.

Still, I feel so alone. What I wouldn't give to have a close friend to go through this with. Or an older sister with kids of her own. Someone I could really talk to. Relate to. Trust.

Because I am scared.

Trevor has been great, but he is just as clueless as I am. We've been trying to be proactive, plan and make decisions, but that is so hard when you have absolutely no idea what you are doing.

I also have some really amazing girlfriends, but they are either not in this particular baby-making phase of life or they live halfway across the country.

Conversely, the friends I have in the area that DO have kids or are pregnant are wonderful people, but none of them I would classify as being necessarily close to me. They just aren't the kind of friend I'd call in tears because my boobs itch and won't stop or because I got overwhelmed trying to register at Babies R Us for the third time.

And I get that my first world pregnancy problems are pretty stupid in the grand scheme of things, and I will probably look back on all of this and roll my eyes that I ever thought THAT was a really issue. But then again, doesn't everyone need someone to talk things through with sometimes? I doubt I am the first or the last pregnant woman in history that needs a little extra reassurance before bringing another human being into the world.

I guess what I am saying is that I don't want to be a bother to anyone, but I am feeling a little lost, confused and afraid at the moment and I have no one to turn to. I just keep thinking that everyone else is has real problems, and, well, my boobs itch a lot and my back aches and who the f*ck really cares. And then I cry because that is what I do. But I don't let Trevor see because he'd just think I'm being silly and hormonal, and I don't want him to know that I am freaking out (again) and my heart is doing that thing (again) that makes him so nervous.

So, I stay up way too late writing a blog post about it all instead. It will solve nothing, but at least I might be able to sleep tonight.

And maybe tomorrow I will feel a little less overwhelmed and alone and things will get better.

Who knows: the Rangers might even manage a third win in a row against Detroit.

There is always hope, right?
